St. Louis Man Killed, 100 Injured When Tent Collapsed

Authorities have identified the body of a 58-year-old St. Louis man who was killed when a tent collapsed in downtown St. Louis last Saturday. 100 people who were inside the tent were also injured when the tent collapsed because of high winds and severe weather around 3:50 p.m. Seventeen people were transported to the hospital, and at least two are still in intensive care. Most of the injuries that were suffered were cuts and bruises.

The tent was set up behind Kilroy’s Sports Bar as a beer garden when peak winds of 42-50 mph tore through downtown St. Louis and a sudden gust lifted the tent up, sending metal poles flying. The tent was larger than 1,000-square-feet and the tavern had gone through the legal process of obtaining a permit for the tent. The tent had also been inspected for safety measures, but the assembly and upkeep of the tent is the responsibility of the contractor who assembles the tent. It is also important for the tent to be assembled to the manufacturer’s specifications to avoid situations such as this.

The Deputy Fire Chief does not know the cause of death in the fatality, and it is still not clear why the tent failed. These tents are made to withstand winds as strong as 90 mph, and the city is conducting further investigation.
