Manufacturer: Eli Lilly

Symbyax Side Effects

Symbyax is made up of two components (fluoxetine and olanzapine), each with its own side effects.

Fluoxetine, better known in its stand-alone form as Prozac, is a member of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) class of antidepressant drugs. These drugs improve mood by preventing the brain from reabsorbing serotonin. They’ve been shown to cause a wide array of side effects, but especially birth defects. Expectant mothers who take SSRIs have an increased risk of giving birth to newborns with the following conditions:

  • Persistent pulmonary hypertension
  • Heart defects
  • Transposition of the great arteries
  • Pulmonary hypertension
  • Craniosyntosis
  • Omphalocele
  • Club foot
  • Limb defects
  • Lung defects
  • Asthma/breathing issues

The other component of Symbyax is olanzapine. This is the atypical antipsychotic part of the medicine, which treats bipolar disorder and schizophrenia by blocking dopamine receptors in the brain. Olanzapine has also been shown to cause birth defects, as well as hyperglycemia, diabetes and premature death.
